Research
Business Goals
1. Keep readers up to date about the election.
2. Create greater public awareness for AsiaOne as a news media platform.
3. Increase traffic to our site for Ad revenue.
4. Ease first time voters into the election process.
Approach
In this case study, I did some research to understand the election process as I was a first time voter that year. I conducted some interviews to better understand the users needs and how they would consume the election news.
Synthesise
User Interviews
I did some quick user interviews with some of our readers to identify what their needs and difficulties are when it comes to reading news and understanding more about the election.
We also had other dependencies and product considerations while designing the site.
As AsiaOne's editors will writing content for the elections during this period, the original homepage will not be regularly updated. We might lose readers as a result as it may give readers an impression that our news are not up to date. Therefore, we collectively decided to re-direct users to the election site instead when they visit AsiaOne.
Our second concern was that it takes editors some time to write articles. In order to give the readers quicker updates, we embedded AsiaOne's Twitter page, which can be updated faster, to the homepage so that it can provide readers the latest news in bite size.
Our third concern was drop offs from readers who leave the page to search for their constituencies. They might land up on other news site based on how Search Engine Optimisation of other sites are done. Therefore, we designed a elaborated search function for users to search for their constituencies based on their postal code.
Features
We gained a 100% increase in page views based on our data from Google Analytics and we were also awarded the Best News Website or Mobile Service Special Award by WAN IFRA for this GE2020 site.
This was my first project with AsiaOne as their UX and graphics designer and I gained lots of insights from my colleagues and friends at AsiaOne. I would like to thank my boss for giving me the opportunity to work on this site alongside with him and the engineers for their kind patience as I stumbled and struggled at certain points. There were many other amazing news sites that were also built by other organisations during the election and it was very eye opening to see how they designed their site for their readers. It really motivated me to become a better UX designer for our readers.
